Richard A. Lupoff, in his review of Tales From Super-Science Fiction, mentioned that "Worlds of Origin, a brilliant Magnus Ridolph yarn,  should have been in Startling Stories, but that magazine had expired with its October 1955 issue, presumably leaving Vance with an orphan manuscript."

There's also an excellent review by Gardner Dozois of Matthew Hughes' story "Wearaway and Flambeau" in F&SF magazine, which includes "but where part of Vance's joke is that Cugel is nowhere near as clever as he thinks that he is, Raffalon really is quick-witted and resourceful..."
