"I recall reading an interview in 'The Guardian' with RP where he states that his favourite book is "Life" by Baron Upspiek,"
made me sit up. I was just thinking the other day how much I liked the segments of the Baron's great multi-volume work (and the snippets from "Scroll from the 9th Dimension") in the Demon Prince series. I wished that some of Vance's later works had provided an opportunity to continue presenting excerpts from "Life" and "Scroll." Now that Lurulu is off his back (more or less) and he has no particular idea in mind for another book, wouldn't it be great if he would relieve his compulsion to write by continuing the Baron's musings on life, the universe, and everything?
Which raises the larger question: with Lurulu out of the way and nothing in particular on the drawing board, what would Vance fans like to see him do?
Since full novels are so difficult and slow to produce, my suggestion would be a return to the field of novelettes, a more manageable length and a form in which Vance has been so successful. How about a third Galactic Effectuator or fourth Rhialto so that those books could be reissued with new material? Or a sequel or prequel to Dragon Masters? A new Cugel?
If you had a vote, what would you vote for?
