I think it could have used a second draft.  I knew who "the guy" was long before he was revealed as the villain.  Another layer of red herrings and obfuscation would have helped.  Probably, if Jack had placed the book somewhere, an editor would have worked with him to make it as good as the Joe Bain books -- which are really good.
