The movie was a pretty good adaptation, except that it toned down the book.

Ronald is a pretty clear precursor to Howard Alan Treesong, in my view, given a "real-world" setting rather than an SF setting.

"Madman Theory", one of the Ellery Queens is in my opinion a good mystery, with a few distinct Vancean touches.

The Joe Bain books (Fox Valley and Pleasant Grove) are very enjoyable; they beautifully evoke central California at a certain time. I have read both many times over the years. One wishes that Jack had written several more of these.
