By now I have had innumerable "Vancean moments", as I call them. Not because Jack "invented" these moments, which are part (or can be part) of the universal human experience, but because he brought them to life in so many unique ways, that the experience of them has been rendered stronger and deeper than they would have been for me, if not for his work.

I could give so many examples. An evening in an inn at the south end of Ullswater in the Lake District; cozy in our bed, we heard the cries from the pot-room below fading away as the evening wore on-- what may once have been irritating noise instead took me to many faraway worlds and ancient sunken isles.....

And as for the ale and sausages; many examples, but the best in Budapest of few years back-- every imaginable sausage grilling, many flagons of brews on offer, groaning board with boon companions.....
