Posts: 269 Oct 7 10 3:54 PM	I guess you like Jack Vance. The UM edition of Night Lamp stands sturdy in the collection. For me, that edition, along with its evocative title, best captures the flavour of Vance's love for "decadence" and mixing in the culture of the old and past in fantasy and SF. I understand the cover painting wasn't originally made for this book, but it fits perfectly. As for the story itself, I don't remember much from it, except that it was written in exquisite style. No particular episode did stand out. Remember the main character being lonely, and training martial arts, and people around him being horrified by his resulting powers. It seems common with many artists/writers, that they in mature years refine their technical skills, while at the same time loosing some of the archetype clarity in overall structure.

Posts: 3759 Oct 10 10 9:45 AM Burned in effigy by the French on Bastille Day	Seeing these paperback volumes reminds me that Night Lamp has never been issued as a regular PB, only the trade PB format. Will the world never be free of injustice? I am a great admirer of Night Lamp. I think it has a strong story line, a lot darker than most of JV's SF novels. All the usual Vance magic is also included. This is also the final and triumphant example of JV's "lost or forgotten worlds" and "edge" themes (see my essay in Cosmopolis/Extant), since the planet Night Lamp is actually drifting off into intergalactic space. At the end of the story, the denizens of Night Lamp are advised to consult an exterminator about abating the White House Ghoul problem. I think this would be a mistake. Like lions on the Serengeti, they add an element of wild danger and enhance tourist appeal.

To be more precise, as I was in a post a year two ago on this subject, I don't understand why Night Lamp could be market-worthy as a paperback release in the UK but not in the US. Yes, I know, the superior tastes of the British consumer of popular fiction, but still.... And now we can't ask Ralph Vicinanza what the problem was. Posts: 2 Oct 16 10 7:15 AM	My impression is that the trade paperback editions of Vance's work (including Night Lamp) continue to sell well, which is why Tor continues to keep them in print as trade paperbacks. Since trade paperbacks are more profitable than mass market paperbacks (for both publisher and author), I would not expect that to change.

I looks so luxurious and mysterious at the same time. It's only $950 at Abe-books! It would be interesting to see the marbled boards of such an exclusive volume. I have a special interest in marbling! And art in general. I bought beautiful marbled papers directly from Italy, to wrap some of the books in my collection (not Vance though) which looked too awful. In a few cases I have even bound my own amateur books, from authors and texts that were not available elsewhere in print. I'm quite pleased with them, and see them as part of my collection. Here is a picture (unfortunately there is no better resolution) of the most incredible marbling I have ever seen. Placed on the edge of the book's pages. It is very dynamic in contrasts, and it looks like whorls and black holes in space.
