Yes, Brin wrote the source novel - sort of. In fact, as is so often the case, the movie has practically nothing in common with the book. Costner took the Postman title and took as a point of departure the "high concept" of the book: Postapocalyptic postman picks up and delivers survivors' letters and thereby keeps alive their halcyon memories of civilized times under a no-longer-existing government. From there, the movie is pure Hollywood - particularly the central conceit of the Road-Warrior-like bad guys.

Ponderous indeed.
