I agree with the obvious selections (Shea, Wolf, Hughes). On being just over half way through the Songs of the Dying Earth collection, I would like to suggest an author who has tried to be like JV, but failed dismally - Tad Williams. I've only read one of his before (The Dragonbone Chair, a long time ago), and remember quite enjoying that (though hardly loving it), but his contribution to SotDE I find only just this side of readable. He seems to think that emulation of JV involves using as many words as possible to say something JV would have said in one (something a certain French individual around here once said about something of mine I was stupid enough to post ), especially in dialogue. So far, this is the worst in the collection.
