First, The Dragon Masters- I agree that the Gaugan illustration contribute strongly to the work- however, every time this topic is discussed, I can't help thinking what an incredible anime TDM would make, working from those illos....

Second, Emphyrio- gloomy? Nonsense. Glorious is more like it, and inspiring- perhaps a little thin toward the end, but the best finishing paragraph I know from anywhere....

Third, City of the Chasch- one of the best set-ups I've come across...Vance describes 5 characters, kills off 3 inthe first few paragraphs, and kills off another on the first page, leaving only one, and him in constant deadly peril until the end of the book....

I don't know if any of you guys remember being 15 (not 5, not 10, but 15), but I wouldn't worry about giving a 15-year-old any book of Jack Vance's- if they're a heavy reader, they've undoubtedly read MUCH "worse" already..........

Well said about Emphyrio, i dont really understand the gloomy tag, i thought it was inspiring story. I loved it until the end. There was a bit of shock atleast to me about those aliens, what they did to Ambroy.

The supressed society, its people made for a good underdog story.
