"Strach", according to my Polish Oxford dictionary, is a word of Slav origin, meaning "fear, dread." It's funny that one of the examples reminds me of Sirene :

"Strach tak po ciemku po Warszawie łazić." (One's afraid to go out at night in Warsaw)

PS happy you enjoyed St Petersburg. It's one of my favorite cities as well! Much more relaxing than Moscow, where everybody is a foreigner.

Ambulo, ergo sum!
