I vaguely remember talking to the font designer when he was reaching a decision about making a new font for the VIE. I told him about Morison of The Times, who developed Times New Roman, that he was a professional typographer, and that articles I had read about him were adamant that designing a new font required specific knowledge, experience and craftwork, and should not be undertaken lightly or in isolation.
Still, in all fairness, I do find Amiante quite readable, although that may be due in part to the fact that when I enter a world of Jack Vance I am oblivious to all else.
