A friend of mine, when she retired, bought a houseboat and regularly travels each year on various canals across Europe with her husband. We visited their boat once when they were docked at Epinal (not very far fom my Manse in the Vosges). That was lovely. A very pleasant little harbour, we had a bottle of Champagne before going to a great restaurant nearby to have lunch. That's my idea of boating. But put-putting for hours, waiting to cross the locks, having to look out all the time in case of collisions, I can't see the fin of it. But she and her husband thrive on it, so what can I say ? They tell me the french countryside seen from the boat is magnificent. They also have two bicycles on board, so every time they stop at a port of call, they take a ride around just to get acquainted with the place. Now that's more like it...
