I read this news yesterday but was too unsettled to post at that time.

I too met Norma twice, and I considered her my "ally" in the Vance camp. She's the one who invited me to visit if I was ever in the Bay Area, and she's the one who remembered me and made good on the invitation when I was in Berkeley the next year. Jack was always the center of attention whenever they were at a convention or had visitors at the house, and I think Norma was appreciative whenever someone spent a few minutes just talking to her. Aside from satisfying my curiosity, that's why I asked here to show me around the house before I left. I spent about half an hour in conversation with Norma alone, and I'm glad I did.

We can thank Norma for encouraging Jack to write when he had so many other distracting interests and for typing all those manuscripts. Before the word-processing era, writers used a substantial portion of their work time just retyping their revised texts or producing the clean final manuscript, mostly mechanical time-consuming work. I'm sure we have more Jack Vance stories to enjoy because of Norma's support and assistance.

Jack included Norma in his dedications several times. In the dedication of Suldrun's Garden he revealed the true state of their partnership: "To Norma, Wife and Colleague." But he is a master of minimalist eloquence. In the dedication of his final novel, Lurulu, he said simply: "To Norma."

But Norma went along on all Jack's adventures into remote parts of the world, living by luck and pluck, serving as hostess, supporting or at least tolerating Jack's various enthusiasms and projects, and working from time to time to being in extra income so he could go freelance. The autobiography I think I'd really like to read would be Norma's.

You are probably right, scenes of agitated tree creatures pelting a vehicle occur at least twice in Vance's works. These little scenes read so true that I would not be surprised at all if they are based on an actual incident during the Vance's travels.

But how to explain the white house ghouls?
