BEIDERBECKE

        Leon Bismarck (Bix) Beiderbecke is at the top of Jacks Pantheon of Jazz players. Jack declared to us recently, in the QFJ forum: I think Beiderbecke is the greatest jazz musician that ever existed; but its hard to recommend Beiderbecke to neophytes, because you cant appreciate him until you know the music better.

* in Ecce And Old Earth: Beiderbecke Circus is located in Clarmond, at the western edge of Sancelade.

* in Ecce And Old Earth again: at Shoup and Company, a clerk offers to sell to Glawen a bust of Leon Beiderbecke.

* in Rumfuddle: Bob Robertson shows the Rumfuddlers a sequence described as : The locale is the Red Barn, a roadhouse twelve miles west of Urbana, Illinois; the time is the late summer of 1926; the occasion is a Charleston dancing contest. The music is provided by the legendary Wolverines, and you will hear the fabulous cornet of Leon Bismarck Beiderbecke.

SZANTHO :

Ali (for Alidor) Szantho, a friend of the Vances who took over the ownership of Houseboat when they decided to travel abroad for a long period. To quote from Norma Vances article A Different View of Jack Vance (see Cosmopolis #41), his pleasure was fishing and he chose another partner who also enjoyed fishing. They felt the houseboat sat too low in the water for fishing, so they removed the heavy ceiling panels. The boat popped up in the water at least a foot, maybe more. This little alteration may have caused the houseboats demise or perhaps it was a misadventure of some kind. We will never know.

        As we can see, the extract from Freitzkes Turn may be an allusion to the unhappy fate of Houseboat, or to Ali Szanthos taste for fish
        As to the quote from Maske: Thaery, the reference is transparent, with the first name Aladar

* in Freitzkes Turn: while playing chess with Miro Hetzel, Faurence Dacre makes a remark to draw Miros attention from the board : There goes old Szantho for his weekly dip in the lake. What weird bathing dress he does affect!

* in Palace Of Love: Ferencz Szantho is the author of a book called Introduction to Old Earth, from which is quoted an extract about Erdenfreude.

* in The Face: Jane Szantho is the author of a book called Tourists Guide to the Coranne, from which a description of Dar Sai is quoted.

* in Marune: Alastor 933: Baron Szantho is one of the fourteen eiodarks of Scharrode.

* in Maske: Thaery: Sune Mircea instructs Jubal Droad to announce himself as Aladar Szantho next time he calls her at her home.
