This photo in today's Le Figaro reminded me of the last episode of one of Jack's earlier short stories, in which a small elite tries to keep a
certain monopoly as long as possible. That proves finally impossible, leading to a conclusion similar to the scene depicted (if one overlooks the ropes and
attributes the acrobats' elevated positions to a newly acquired skill). The title of the story was used in the Netherlands as the general title of a

A month or so ago my brain entered a pocket of non-causility, causing my person to suddenly develop a desperate need to acquire and devour the collected works
of Georges Simenon. They have proved a formidable source to expand my French vocabulary. As a side effect, I have been smitten with the highly Vancean
urge to coin some new words, slight modifications of the Simenon originals or, in case the words didn't need any change, to define new meanings for them.

In Fader's Waft, Rhialto visits the village Az-Khaf to solicit the services of Um Foad to excavate the dry seabed where the Perciplex lies buried. In his description of Um Foad's house, Vance mentions blue windows. But as we know so well, the sunlight of the later Aeons is reddish (admittedly, less red in the 16th Aeon than in the 21st). Sarsem mentions that he can do so with a precision of "the thousandth part of one percent." Rhialto arrives in the 16th Aeon 30 years later than the date intended. Thus, 30 years may be close to the thousandth part of 1 percent of five Aeons. By my calculation, this implies that five Aeons equals 3 million years, or 600,000 years per Aeon.
