I just wanted to say "thank you" to Jack for many hours of enjoyment. I've been reading his stories for many years now, I'd say almost four
decades. I have many in my personal library and I find that they stand up to re-reading, truly the acid test for any literature. I enjoy the characters, the
stories, and the oddly formalized dialogue. Jack was right to write what he wanted and never mind the editors.

That's pretty much it. Just ... thanks!

Dear Jack,

Several years ago we had a nice phone conversation, and discussed jazz. Later, my dad, Dave Pierce Sr., had a deeper jazz discussion with you. Dad has been in
a few jazz bands, one with former members of the Queen City Band, and in 1952 he became friends with trombonist George Brunies of the New Orleans Rhythm Kings,
and sat in with George and his current band to play some King Oliver tunes. Dad and I are both interested in the music you've been recording. My dad...

Please let me reintroduce myself. My name is Steve Frame and we met several years ago at a convention in Ohio where we shared a glass of whiskey while you
told some wonderful stories. I'm writing to you because I'll be visiting my brother at UC Davis in October. I don't want to impose on your
hospitality, but one day while he is busy at work I'd like to come to Oakland and visit with you and see your "house in the hills." If you're

I have been an admirer of yours for many years and, on reading Lurulu, I was amazed that one of the significant characters was given the enigmatic name of Loy Tremaine. As my name is Lloyd Treymaine I was as bewildered as any character residing in the Gaean Reach. The coincidence is startling; Treymaine is an unusual surname and Lloyd is a fairly unusual forename. The combination of the two prompted thoughts of could our paths ever have crossed? I don't think so.

My love of reading was encouraged from an early age by my mother. She was a very capable woman who could turn her hand to many things - decorating a cake or a house, making clothes or kitchen cabinets, and even a bit of plumbing. Her interests were amateur dramatics, bridge, and of course, reading (almost exclusively) crime fiction. She was, as the saying has it, "nobody's mug". Jack Vance stands at the head of a small group. I own, or have owned, copies of all but the hardest to find writings. My copies are not worth much now because they don't rest on a shelf.
